In a letter to the Senate Finance Committee, more than one-hundred physicians' groups have urged the elimination of the Medicare sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula, asserting that the formula is an impediment to successful health care delivery and payment reforms that can improve the quality of patient care while lowering growth in costs.  In place of the formula, the physicians' groups have developed principles and core elements that can form the basis for new federal policy on a transition from the SGR to a higher performing Medicare program.

To review a copy of the letter, including the principles and core elements as proposed, please see http://www.ama-assn.org/resources/doc/washington/sgr-transition-principles-sign-on-letter.pdf.
